Why do some dishes contain sugar?

In general, we avoid refined sugar or cane sugar as well as ingredients with added sugar.

However, we make a few small exceptions for certain traditional ingredients, such as:

  • candied ginger
  • Worcestershire sauce (vegan) or
  • mustard

These are ingredients where the typical flavour can only be achieved through traditional preparation and cannot simply be replicated at home by mixing individual ingredients.

These ingredients are only used in very small, carefully controlled amounts. As a result, the total sugar content of our meals is strictly monitored and averages less than 12 g of sugar per meal.

For comparison: the DGE (German Nutrition Society) recommends limiting the intake of free sugars to less than 10% of daily energy intake, which equates to around 50 g per day for the average adult.

Our meals are designed so that you can enjoy them in a varied way, supporting a colourful, balanced and nutrient-rich diet based on a wide variety of vegetables and legumes.

Using our filter function, you can exclude dishes that use ingredients such as candied ginger, Worcestershire sauce (vegan) or mustard in their recipe.
